Red Kuba Pattern Kisii Soapstone Heart Dish
Working with soft soapstone found in the Kisii District of Kenya, Gusii artisans hand carve stone dishes into a simple heart shape. Artisans in a Nairobi workshop give the plain stone pieces character by hand dyeing the stone a rich red and blue, and adding incised details reminiscent of the patterns on Kuba cloth.
