Fair Trade hand crafted basket made from seed beads in the shape of a jar with lid. Regular size baskets take at least a day to create. Large baskets take 1 1/2 – 2 days to create.
Your purchase empowers women in Kenya to build a sustainable business, alleviate extreme poverty and to support their families with dignity.
These basket weavers demonstrate amazing patience and concentration as they create each beaded wire basket. They string tiny colored glass beads on wire in meticulous fashion to create the patterns.
The only tool that the weavers use is a pair of pliers to manipulate and cut the wire. Most patterns are created from ideas the weavers have. Sometimes they will sketch an idea on paper and then try to reproduce it as a basket.
These baskets are traditionally given as gifts. For example, the bowls are given from mother to daughter at her wedding ceremony to symbolize the woman?s ability to care for husband and family.
The small lidded containers are given from grandmothers to granddaughters at the wedding. The baskets hold bracelets and earrings that mark her status as a newly married woman.

The weaving group that produces these glass beads on wire ?gems? is located in central Kenya. They are members of the Maasai and Kikuyu ethnic communities.
These baskets are traditionally given at weddings. The bowls are given as presents from mother to daughter during the wedding ceremony to symbolize the wife feeding the family.
Patterns are laid out on paper and then painstakingly translated to the woven object. Wire is manipulated with small pliers as the baskets are woven.
