  • Multicolour & Navy Woven Fan

These colourful handwoven fans certainly come in handy in their hot, Ghanaian motherland, but they’ll also deliver a refreshing splash of West African colour to the walls of your home bound to bring a touch of ethical charm and cheer to any room!

Choose something totally unique for yourself or a loved one: these brightly patterned, handwoven Bolga fans are all strikingly different, so you’ll be taking home – and protecting – a piece of African culture when you purchase one from The Basket Room.

The majority of the weavers who create woven fans are men, having been taught the traditional craft of basket weaving from their own mothers and fathers. • Natural and White Speckled Woven Laundry Basket

This collection of handwoven baskets are all hand-dyed using only natural materials, their beautiful natural hues achieved through foraging, pounding and mulching local grasses, tree bark, soil and even fireplace charcoal and soot. Prepared fibres like sisal, elephant grass and milulu grass are then boiled in large vats of water with the natural dye materials, though sometimes the fibres are buried in the ground next to tree roots to take on the desired colour.
Creating natural dyes for weaving is a labour-intensive process, but an altogether worthwhile one. Choose from large woven planters in natural rust and terracotta tones and geometric striped storage baskets in ochres, blacks and whites.
The added beauty of baskets using natural dyes from plants is that they create more sustainable work for more people, without producing any negative impact on the environment. Like every basket, each natural dye basket tells a rich story of the time and skill invested in its creation.

Most of these men work in agriculture, but the dry seasons make farming increasingly difficult and unpredictable. Basket weaving brings these people the opportunity to earn a flexible second income.

It is our mission to build relationships with the most talented weavers across Africa, and we’re so happy to be offering more work to these artisans as our Ghanaian collection expands to include these incredible handwoven fans. Want to know more about these weavers? Click here.

  • PANGO: Natural Lidded Storage Baskets

The majority of the weavers who create woven fans are men, having been taught the traditional craft of basket weaving from their own mothers and fathers.

Click here.

  • RAHISI: Natural Square Storage Baskets

The majority of the weavers who create woven fans are men, having been taught the traditional craft of basket weaving from their own mothers and fathers.

Click here.

  • Round Bolga Market Basket

  • UDONGO: Terracotta and Natural Patterned Woven Storage Baskets
