These beautiful and practical laundry baskets with lids have travelled from the shores of the Jade Sea on a journey of sustainable craft and ethical production. Each laundry basket in this very special collection is made by a weaver living on the shores of Lake Turkana in North West Kenya. This region is part of the renowned ?Cradle of Mankind?, where some of the earliest evidence of human evolution has been found. It?s also an area notorious for its severe drought, which this arid land and its people have endured since the eighties.
Due to long term marginalisation, poor infrastructure and little integration with the wider Kenyan economy, many Turkana people live in relative poverty. In 1992, a Catholic charity started up a basketry craft project to help support the livelihoods of women in a number of settlements along Lake Turkana – and today 300 women from six local villages weave baskets as a means of income.
For many of these weavers, this work is the difference between putting food on the table, and relying on emergency relief. For this craft group to gain wider access to market ? through increased basket orders from The Basket Room ? means sustainable livelihoods and the growth of the Turkana economy.?

Carefully hand woven by a member of a women?s weaving group in rural Kenya, this large laundry hamper has been formed from forty balls of Kenyan sisal grass. The strong leaves of this indigenous plant undergo a long process of harvesting, rolling and dyeing – all performed by hand – before six long days of weaving begin.?

These fabulous laundry baskets have travelled across the shores of the Jade Sea and the deserts of North Western Kenya – along a transparent and ethical supply chain – to our HQ in the Cotswolds. To make one of these baskets yours is to support the livelihoods of the weavers who produced them, supporting the growth of the developing Turkana economy.
Turkana is Kenya?s largest county and known for making up part of the famous ?Cradle of Mankind?, where some of the earliest evidence of human evolution has been found. This is also a part of Africa infamous for severe drought, which the Turkana have suffered from since the eighties.
In 1992, a Catholic charity initiated a basketry project in Turkana, to help start to integrate this marginalized corner of Kenya with the wider Kenyan economy. ?Today, 300 women from six local villages weave baskets here as a means of income, mostly taught the craft by their own mothers and grandmothers. ?

Each laundry basket takes forty balls of sisal to complete, whilst two expert leather workers (known locally as ?fundi?) produce KUNDI?s leather trim and handles.?

Created by one of the most experienced members of the women?s weaving cooperatives in the rural Eastern Region of Kenya, this lovely laundry hamper is hand woven from the indigenous sisal plant. The stiff leaves of this fibrous shrub are often used for producing rope and twine, and undergo a lengthy process of harvesting, rolling and dyeing – all by hand – before being carefully woven. Each laundry basket takes six days and up to forty balls of sisal to complete, whilst two skilled leather workers (known locally as ?fundi?) produce the trim and handles.?
Large and robust enough for storing your logs and kindling yet soft and supple enough to be used as nursery storage, your woven laundry basket really can be put to use all over the home.
Many members of the women?s weaving cooperative in Kenya are from farming families, largely relying on unpredictable rainfall and an unreliable income. Basket weaving has become a source of alternative income for these communities during the dry seasons, helping families meet their basic living costs.

Our coloured baskets are produced by a small Kenyan weaving cooperative of around forty members, with a dedicated dye manager who oversees colour quality and consistency. Sisal grass is sourced ready-rolled when regular orders come in from The Basket Room, and is hand-dyed in large vats and hung out to dry before a traditional twining method is used. This is a highly skilled workforce of women who have woven from a young age, having been taught by the family matriarch. Using their own tape measures helps the weavers produce the set sizes we offer. This group meets weekly to receive new orders, deliver completed baskets, and receive payment.
Our partnership with this cooperative helps women to support their families more comfortably, since subsistence farming alone often fails to meet the family?s needs. Buy one of our woven baskets and you actively support these weavers? livelihoods, and our commitment to empowering women.
