The sisal plants are grown in Kenya and are a very eco-friendly crop. It requires little water and can be harvested year-round. The leaves are typically harvested by hand and the green outer leaf is removed and used as animal feed. This leaves behind long strands of super-strong natural sisal fiber that are hung in the sun to dry. Once dried, the fiber is dyed and woven into sturdy and functional baskets.

Read moreThis collection of handwoven baskets are all hand-dyed using only natural materials, their beautiful natural hues achieved through foraging, pounding and mulching local grasses, tree bark, soil and even fireplace charcoal and soot. Prepared fibres like sisal, elephant grass and milulu grass are then boiled in large vats of water with the natural dye materials, though sometimes the fibres are buried in the ground next to tree roots to take on the desired colour.
Creating natural dyes for weaving is a labour-intensive process, but an altogether worthwhile one. Choose from large woven planters in natural rust and terracotta tones and geometric striped storage baskets in ochres, blacks and whites.
The added beauty of baskets using natural dyes from plants is that they create more sustainable work for more people, without producing any negative impact on the environment. Like every basket, each natural dye basket tells a rich story of the time and skill invested in its creation.

Read moreThis collection of handwoven baskets are all hand-dyed using only natural materials, their beautiful natural hues achieved through foraging, pounding and mulching local grasses, tree bark, soil and even fireplace charcoal and soot. Prepared fibres like sisal, elephant grass and milulu grass are then boiled in large vats of water with the natural dye materials, though sometimes the fibres are buried in the ground next to tree roots to take on the desired colour.
Creating natural dyes for weaving is a labour-intensive process, but an altogether worthwhile one. Choose from large woven planters in natural rust and terracotta tones and geometric striped storage baskets in ochres, blacks and whites.

Read moreOur exquisite and ethical basket bags are inspired by tribal patterns and traditional Kenyan colourways, and hand woven by members of the Kamba tribe in Kenya. Each basket bag takes up to four days to complete before being sent to a local leather works to be fitted with beautifully supple cow hide straps.
These basket bags are made from wool from second hand jumpers, woven around local sisal grass. The weavers regularly visit the ‘gikombas’ (clothes markets) to select and purchase colourful woollen jumpers, which are washed and unravelled at home into separate balls of coloured wool – and then woven. The bags are finished in a local leather works, being fitted supple cow hide straps for carrying.

Each basket bag takes up to four days to complete before being sent to a local leather works to be fitted with beautifully supple cow hide straps.
These basket bags are made from wool from second hand jumpers, woven around local sisal grass. The weavers regularly visit the ‘gikombas’ (clothes markets) to select and purchase colourful woollen jumpers, which are washed and unravelled at home into separate balls of coloured wool – and then woven. The bags are finished in a local leather works, being fitted supple cow hide straps for carrying.

These cotton liners are sewn by women facing multiple barriers to employment, being previously unemployed and with no prior work experience. Read moreThis collection of handwoven baskets are all hand-dyed using only natural materials, their beautiful natural hues achieved through foraging, pounding and mulching local grasses, tree bark, soil and even fireplace charcoal and soot. Prepared fibres like sisal, elephant grass and milulu grass are then boiled in large vats of water with the natural dye materials, though sometimes the fibres are buried in the ground next to tree roots to take on the desired colour.
Creating natural dyes for weaving is a labour-intensive process, but an altogether worthwhile one. Choose from large woven planters in natural rust and terracotta tones and geometric striped storage baskets in ochres, blacks and whites.

Each basket bag takes up to four days to complete before being sent to a local leather works to be fitted with beautifully supple cow hide straps.
These basket bags are made from wool from second hand jumpers, woven around local sisal grass. The weavers regularly visit the ‘gikombas’ (clothes markets) to select and purchase colourful woollen jumpers, which are washed and unravelled at home into separate balls of coloured wool – and then woven. The bags are finished in a local leather works, being fitted supple cow hide straps for carrying.

Methodically hand woven by a member of a women?s weaving group in rural Kenya, this large laundry hamper has been formed from forty balls of Kenyan sisal grass. The strong leaves of this indigenous plant undergo a long process of harvesting, rolling and dyeing – all performed by hand – before six long days of weaving begin.?
Farming is the backbone of most Kenyan weaver’s domestic lives. Rainy seasons and hard work in the fields bring cabbages and bananas, oranges, collard and tropical fruit to the table. But as drought persists, these women must increasingly look to alternative ways of providing for their families and paying school fees. This is where weaving comes in ? and your purchases help us keep this precious craft alive.
