The bone is “batiked” which is an age old art process used in Africa. The patterns are applied by placing wax on the white bone and dipping the bone into a dark brown/black dye, resulting in the beautiful African mud cloth designs.

These cotton liners are sewn by women facing multiple barriers to employment, being previously unemployed and with no prior work experience. These women have learnt exemplary sewing skills on free training programmes and now work to commission, costed at the London Living Wage. Read moreThis collection of handwoven baskets are all hand-dyed using only natural materials, their beautiful natural hues achieved through foraging, pounding and mulching local grasses, tree bark, soil and even fireplace charcoal and soot. Prepared fibres like sisal, elephant grass and milulu grass are then boiled in large vats of water with the natural dye materials, though sometimes the fibres are buried in the ground next to tree roots to take on the desired colour.
Creating natural dyes for weaving is a labour-intensive process, but an altogether worthwhile one. Choose from large woven planters in natural rust and terracotta tones and geometric striped storage baskets in ochres, blacks and whites.
