The sisal plants are grown in Kenya and are a very eco-friendly crop. It requires little water and can be harvested year-round. The leaves are typically harvested by hand and the green outer leaf is removed and used as animal feed. This leaves behind long strands of super-strong natural sisal fiber that are hung in the sun to dry. Once dried, the fiber is dyed and woven into sturdy and functional baskets.

Read moreThis collection of handwoven baskets are all hand-dyed using only natural materials, their beautiful natural hues achieved through foraging, pounding and mulching local grasses, tree bark, soil and even fireplace charcoal and soot. Prepared fibres like sisal, elephant grass and milulu grass are then boiled in large vats of water with the natural dye materials, though sometimes the fibres are buried in the ground next to tree roots to take on the desired colour.
Creating natural dyes for weaving is a labour-intensive process, but an altogether worthwhile one. Choose from large woven planters in natural rust and terracotta tones and geometric striped storage baskets in ochres, blacks and whites.
The added beauty of baskets using natural dyes from plants is that they create more sustainable work for more people, without producing any negative impact on the environment. Like every basket, each natural dye basket tells a rich story of the time and skill invested in its creation.

Read moreSo popular are our Extra-Fine Natural Woven Planter Baskets and Unique Woven Planter Baskets that we were able to place an order for a third basket collection from this exceptional Kenyan weaving group. This is a group we’re especially close to and have worked with them since The Basket Room began in 2014.
The Extra-Fine Colourful Woven Planter Baskets baskets are produced using the ultra-fine weave and traditional patterns seen in the Extra-Fine woven baskets, and the variety and depth of colour that characterises the Unique Woven Planters.
These unique baskets are hand woven from indigenous sisal grass in rural Kenya by women working as part an incredibly creative weaving group. these wonderful pieces out of Wild Olive (Oleacea Africana) or Jacaranda.
Wild Olive grows throughout East and Southern Africa, and is known to be one
of the heaviest woods, it is ideal for carving smaller pieces such as salad
servers and bowls with it’s colour and grain. The Jacaranda is a faster
growing bigger tree, more suited to larger carvings as it is a considerably
softer wood. In Kenya, carvers must belong to a co-operative to obtain
permits to collect wood and market their goods. The Industry is closely
managed, providing a sustainable resource for ongoing use. Richard is 38 and
works through the Gikomba carving co-operative, he has a young family and is
striving to build a good business through his hard work and initiative. -

Prepared fibres like sisal, elephant grass and milulu grass are then boiled in large vats of water with the natural dye materials, though sometimes the fibres are buried in the ground next to tree roots to take on the desired colour.
Creating natural dyes for weaving is a labour-intensive process, but an altogether worthwhile one. Choose from large woven planters in natural rust and terracotta tones and geometric striped storage baskets in ochres, blacks and whites.

Read moreOur exquisite and ethical basket bags are inspired by tribal patterns and traditional Kenyan colourways, and hand woven by members of the Kamba tribe in Kenya. Each basket bag takes up to four days to complete before being sent to a local leather works to be fitted with beautifully supple cow hide straps.
These basket bags are made from wool from second hand jumpers, woven around local sisal grass. The weavers regularly visit the ‘gikombas’ (clothes markets) to select and purchase colourful woollen jumpers, which are washed and unravelled at home into separate balls of coloured wool – and then woven. The bags are finished in a local leather works, being fitted supple cow hide straps for carrying.

The stiff leaves of this indigenous plant undergo a long process of harvesting, rolling and dyeing – all performed by hand – before six days of weaving takes place.?
By choosing any of our woven baskets you help us keep supporting these talented weavers in becoming less dependent on self-sufficiency farming which can be perilously unpredictable.

To measure your wrist size, use a strip of paper cut from the short side of an A4 size paper. The paper strip should be about 21.5 cm long. Tie the strip around your wrist at the bottom of your palm and mark your size. Measure against a ruler .
