Our coloured baskets are produced by a small Kenyan weaving cooperative of around forty members, with a dedicated dye manager who oversees colour quality and consistency. Sisal grass is sourced ready-rolled when regular orders come in from The Basket Room, and is hand-dyed in large vats and hung out to dry before a traditional twining method is used. This is a highly skilled workforce of women who have woven from a young age, having been taught by the family matriarch. Using their own tape measures helps the weavers produce the set sizes we offer. This group meets weekly to receive new orders, deliver completed baskets, and receive payment.
Our partnership with this cooperative helps women to support their families more comfortably, since subsistence farming alone often fails to meet the family?s needs. Buy one of our woven baskets and you actively support these weavers? livelihoods, and our commitment to empowering women. Bring a splash of colour to laundry days with one of our beautiful, hand woven laundry baskets – all handmade in Kenya. Choose from our colour block sisal baskets with leather carry handles or opt for a sturdy, lidded laundry basket woven from doum palm leaf. Each laundry hamper takes up to six days to weave by hand, and all can be repurposed around the home as log baskets or toy storage, for example. Our sisal laundry baskets are a particularly good size for blankets and throws, slippers and gloves and hats, whilst our lidded doum palm baskets come in three handy sizes, plus a smaller basket in round and oval shapes. Our range of ethically produced laundry baskets offer something practical and beautiful for every household – even the largest family!
